"EMT" is the abbreviation for "Emergency Medical Technician."
The Star of Life is a symbol used to identify emergency medical services. The snake and the staff are the predominant symbols for medicine and healthcare. The six points of the star represent the six key emergency medical service (EMS) tasks performed by rescuers: Detection, Reporting, Response, On-scene care, Care in transit, and Transfer to definitive care.
This design originated from the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in order to differentiate the emergency medical service symbol from the symbol of the Red Cross. It has since been widely adopted internationally as a symbol for search and rescue units and equipment within the EMT/EMS.
